Futurband Publishing - Song Publishing Company
At
the same time Matt Jordan formed Futurband Records in the early
80's, he founded Futurband Publishing to administer the songs, and he
joined ASCAP. Songwriters were given 50% of the publishing.
Frequently, the publishing company makes more money than the record
company, or the income the band makes in tours. The reason is there
are many sources of revenue like sheet music sales, and from
performances of the song.
Futurband Publishing performs the administration of the rights of its
associated writers. We administer these rights with mechanical
licenses, and collections from licensing companies, such as Harvey
Fox agency. We find buyers and users, collect money, and see to it
that the songs are copyright protected and the writer is paid.
Performing rights companies like ASCAP and BMI collect a fee for song
usage on the radio, television, from night clubs, Musak, web casting,
etc. There is a statutory rate for song writers to collect when
performers use their songs. This was recently raised from 8 cents to
8 ½ cents for each song.
Four songs by Wells Kelly, formerly of "Orleans" were
published by Futurband Publishing. (Click both "Matt Jordan
Futurband" and "Sometimes Love," a movie about the
life and tragic death of Wells Kelly.) These songs were, "Givin
It Up," "Why," "The Grass Is Always Greener,"
and "Sometimes Love," the name and theme song of the
movie. "Sometimes Love" made Billboard magazine. |
